Assessment of student learning outcomes is essential to the co-curricular experience and student success. Still, embarking on a division-wide initiative to develop a comprehensive set of learning outcomes and a solid assessment process for student affairs can be overwhelming. Where to begin and who to involve? What resources exist, how do you build staff competencies, and what should the process and support look like? These are all central elements to contemplate. In this webinar, participants will learn how the University of Missouri approached the challenge of student affairs assessment. The presenters will explain how they were able to develop a strong framework and process while aligning with university-wide initiatives.
Presented by:Ashli Grabau, Coordinator - Student Affairs Assessment and Planning, University of Missouri
According to Bresciani (2010), the “strategic plan represents the ideal of what the institutional leadership desires to achieve” (p. 39). Traditionally, however, strategic planning has often been viewed as an intimidating and difficult process leading to a document that may sit on a shelf (or be stored on a flash drive) and not be used in organizational decision-making processes. Using Bresciani’s Seven Practical Steps to ensuring data-driven planning, this webinar will provide theory, tips, and resources for each of the seven steps to help practitioners select those that fit best with their institutional culture. The webinar will provide links between Bresciani’s seven steps and several related planning processes and tools that dovetail with traditional strategic planning elements, including Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Appreciative Inquiry, Integrated Budgeting and Planning, and the use of Logic Models.
Presented by:Dr. Anne E. Lundquist, Director of Student Affairs Strategic Planning and Assessment, Western Michigan University

Imagine booking a trip but never getting on the plane, or buying a movie ticket but never walking into the theater. Or what if you fully planned a program, but you never executed it? Barring environmental or extraneous factors, it's hard to imagine not following through in these scenarios. Now, think about learning valuable information through an assessment project, but never using it. This should be equally unfathomable. The data collected in our assessments should be meaningful by informing our work and helping us continually improve. This final presentation in the Learn Forward series will offer strategies on how to make data-informed decisions (with or without additional resources), demonstrate why this is the most important part of the assessment cycle, and review why you should share both your results and use of them with your entire college or university community.
Presented by:Jen Wells, Director of Assessment - Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Kennesaw State University
